Roots has stepped up it’s game again and is holding one of the biggest off-season trance parties of the year. With there usual success in throwning parties, it’s no suprise that Roots was the chosen venue for the 2008 Organik party. The theme of this years party is Ultra Violet. As always, in true Organik style, there are some big prizes for the best make-up and outfits. The line-up boasts some very impressive names, such as ON from Afrogalactic, PHYX from Timecode, SLUG from Nexus Media, PLUSMINUS from Organik and finally JEAN ZEN fom Alfred States. Look forward to firedancers on the beach, a food and craft market and a fully decorated dancefloor. Roots has also installed air conditioning into the dance area, therefore insuring a much more comfortable party experience!

Metal 4 Africa started up as an online iniative to promote to existence of a healthy metal scene in South Africa. Since then it has hosted annual events which have proved to be highly successful and launched many local bands onto the broader music scene in South Africa.
This years Winterfest takes place in the Klein Libertas Theatre in Stellenbosch on Saturday the 28th of June. Due to transport problems last year, Metal 4 Africa has organised buses to transport people too and from the venue. Drop off points for your cars can be found on the website, and the added cost is R70 on top of the R50 general enterance fee. It’s definately a good option, especially when alcohol is involved!
This year the main feature of the show is the filming of the first ever African Metal DVD. Winterfest is the “Part 2” of the video and it should be a very exciting project to get involved in . Details for the DVD are also avaliable on the website.Once the finalists have been chosen at Klein Libertas, the final show down will happen at R.O.A.R. on the 5th of July. Since voted Cape Town’s Number 1 live music venue, R.O.A.R. guarentee’s a very impressive finale to the Winterfest phenomena! The judges include the ROAR sound engineer, their Paul Bothner rep aswell as their Jackson guitar rep. Prizes include Jackson Guitars, as well as the usual royalty that are rewarded to the winners of the competition. Besides excellent sound, R.O.A.R is also renowned for its brilliant drink specials which never dissapoint. (Double whiskey and mix R7.50...enough said!)

This years Obs Fest is coming around again in a couple of months and preparations are already underway. Besides all the stage performances, markets and bands, there is another aspect that has been added to the festival. This is the street art which is done by chosen artists and is done directly on the walls of the Observatory suburb. This always proves so popular because you have the chance to watch the artists in action, and the art work become a mural, brightening up the streets of Observatory.
The first year couple of years that art was introduced to the festival, organisers organised some big South African artists to take part. The list included Falko, Senyol, Mak1one and Solo One! But the organisers decided it was a good idea to introduced amateur artists instead of the big names. This works well as it brings fresh idea’s to the streets, as well as helping to get these amateur artists names out. The brief is usually quite simple, just design a piece for a certain dimension, usually about 2m x 2m. On the day you bring your materials and a drop sheet and get painting. Because of limited wall space on Lower Main Road, the location is usually a street or two off Lower Main Road. It is always well advertised and people usually flock to see the artists at work. If you are interested in taking part in Obs Art then check out the Obs Fest website, there is a link for you to register on and get all the details. Kep in mind inly about 10 artists can compete so its first come first serve. You do need to send in a photo of your work to qualify for a spot in the competition. Winners prizes are sponsored by Montana Paint and Shelflife.

These Four Walls next exhibition will host the work of local artist Maya Marshak.
She is renowned for her exquisite ink and graphite works the explore the fragile relationship between freedom and boundaries, man and nature and how the imagination is capable of creating both things of beauty and of destruction. She lets thes ideas lie behind the beauty of her lines and compositions for us to explore and discover.
Her “Undress” exhibition will open on Thursday the 26th of June. Snacks will be provided by Queen of Tarts in Observatory.

Lesley Miles (M.A. Clinical Psychology) and Muffie Welch (M.Soc.Sc Clinical Social Work) have opened a councelling and psychotherapy clinic just off Lower Main Road. This is the first of its kind on Observatory, and is something which has been severly lacking. Confidentiality is key here and Lesley and Muffie are adiment to make people feel comfortable in coming and talking about their problems. The types of therapy range from trauma for incidents such as rape, hijacking, assault, etc to individual psychotherapy for depression, anxiety etc, as well as relationship councelling.
Another very important aspect of their training is HIV/AIDS councelling, as well as other life-threatening or chronic illnesses. The clinic will act as a multi-faceted councelling establishment.
The clinic will be open from the begining of July, and bookings will be essential. Your first consult will be a chance for Lesley or Muffie to do introductory general analysis and from then they will concentrate on the issue you have come to discuss.
